  • City of Monroe Redistricting

    Nov 24, 2022

The city of Monroe, LA is planning to redistrict the city council districts throughout the city. With a city with a Black majority, the redistricting of the maps is vital to fairer and equitable voting on the city council. As it stands, the current proposed redistricting maps exhibit that Blacks will lose the city council majority and return the city to be controlled by those in the minority rather than those in the majority. With the emergence of a crafty downtown plan and "redistricting" efforts, it only takes one Black vote to shift the...

  • Dismal City LEAP School Scores

    Eddie D. Gillis|Nov 24, 2022

A report published on November 16, 2022 indicated that schools in the state of Louisiana did better than expected when the state compared performance scores in 2022 as compared to those from 2021. That would be (and is) good news to state education officials, but the report also said that "a majority" of schools, not all, improved their scores. That being the case only highlights that more work is still needed. The scores come on the heels of numerous school disruptions caused by COVID-19 and...

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, the NAACP Monroe/Ouachita local chapter, held an election for officers. Several candidates were vying to unseat current president, Rev. Ambrose Douzart. Initial results of the votes showed that Rev. Douzart won with 35 votes, while Rev. Tharris Bishop, 10 votes, Mrs. Lynetta Whitehurst, 16 votes, and Ms. Marie Brown, 24 votes. That number of votes tallied is different from the total number of members in the local branch, perhaps indicating that many members did not cast their vote. An official complaint is in...

  • Knocking Down (Out) Trump

    Eddie D. Gillis|Nov 24, 2022

There is a new “Jaws” movie that is on the horizon. No, not that Jaws. If one would take a look at what is going on in the Republican Party, it is clear to see, that they are not a bunch of happy campers. What was joy and euphoria before the midterm elections quickly turned to gloom as election night wore on. Republicans weren’t able to ride the big wave that they thought was coming, which would have sent Democrats running for the hills. When the wave ended up being only a ripple, it didn’t take long for the finger pointing to start. Now, a...

  • "BREAK THE MOLD"

    Marion Obafemi|Nov 24, 2022

Like many of you, when I am in trouble, I call upon the Lord. And, it was during a time of crisis in my life that He inspired me with this "joint" that I wanted to "pass" on to y'all. It is my prayer that we are reminded that God should not be used as an ATM machine that we run to ONLY when we are in a crisis or in need of a blessing. When we reflect upon what He has already done and continues to do in our lives, we will usually find the answers we are seeking to solve our present situation. Mos...

  • The End is Near

    Nov 24, 2022

To the people of God, let no man deceive you; he that commits sin is of the devil. Whosoever abides in God does not commit sin. Whoever sins has never seen Him nor knows Him. Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin, because God's holy spirit lives in him; therefore, he cannot commit sin, because he is born of God. In this, the children of God are known, and you will know the children of the devil. If you keep God's commandments, then whatever you ask, or request of God, you will receive. Well Bless God! Superintendent, Henry...

  • The Preacher's Wife

    Jessica DeTiege|Nov 24, 2022

Watching the movie, The Preacher’s Wife is a holiday tradition that I have for myself. It is themed around Christmas time, so it is appropriate for this time of year. The movie is set in New York City and features an all-star cast featuring Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, Loretta Divine, and Gregory Hines. The movie tells the story of a pastor, Reverend Henry Biggs, leading his struggling church and additional issues that arise when serving as a leader of a church congregation in a predominately Black community. The c...
