Knocking Down (Out) Trump

November 24, 2022

There is a new “Jaws” movie that is on the horizon. No, not that Jaws. If one would take a look at what is going on in the Republican Party, it is clear to see, that they are not a bunch of happy campers. What was joy and euphoria before the midterm elections quickly turned to gloom as election night wore on. Republicans weren’t able to ride the big wave that they thought was coming, which would have sent Democrats running for the hills. When the wave ended up being only a ripple, it didn’t take long for the finger pointing to start. Now, a lot of those fingers are pointing to Donald Trump for making the election about him and the host of candidates who were poisonous to a GOP landslide victory. Trump, politically speaking is wounded just like a shark that got stuck by a spear gun that divers use. We all know that if a person is in shark infested water, the last thing that individual wants to do, is bleed. Sharks have that uncanny natural ability to sense blood in the water and immediately after detecting that blood, they go in for the kill. Donald Trump in the eyes of a growing disenchanted political party, must feel like a shark that is bleeding. It doesn’t matter if it’s human blood or not, sharks with their instincts react. Quickly and often deadly. If one would just listen to what some of Trump’s used-to-be allies are saying, it would seem that his old crew is ganging up on him. Remember, Paul Ryan who used to be speaker of the House. He was no match for Trump, as he has hopped on the wagon saying that the party “will lose” in 2024 if Trump is the nominee. Then there is Chris Christie (where has he been?) who is saying that the party “needs to move on”, it is time for new leadership. Even Lindsay Graham who was one of Trump’s strongest cheerleaders, was hesitant to say if he would support Trump if there was another challenger. Remember in Jaws how the townspeople went all out to catch the shark that was just about to ruin their summer tourist season? The shark had to go. Right now, that sentiment is growing as more potential contenders are saying that Trump’s time “is over” because he is looking like more of a loser than a winner. Remember when Trump said while campaigning, that they (Republicans) would get tired of winning? The only time Trump talks about winning is when he continues to lament on how he lost an election that he says that he won. Even those who were with him back in 2020(Mike Pence) doesn’t believe that anymore. Does Trump care about what they think? No. Because Trump has what any serious contender will need, which is the majority of conservative voters. Trump still has a sizable base and it won’t be easy for anyone (Ron DeSantis) to take down Trump. Those 2016 Republican presidential contenders quickly found out that Trump played hardball sensing that's what the base wanted. Was there a Republican before Trump who openly questioned the birthright of the nation’s first Black president? No. Trump was like a shark, as he went in for the kill each time, whether it was Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Lindsay Graham (yes, him) and “poor old” Ted Cruz. At that time, Trump was the big shark that drove the others away. Even though the election is still two years away, the campaign season seems to start earlier after each election cycle. Perhaps those who have presidential aspirations are hoping that “something” happens to Trump. Short of him dying, maybe he will be out of the running if any of his legal issues prevail against him. Are they pulling for the DOJ to indict Trump, or NY Attorney General Letitia James to hit Trump with a knockout punch? Somehow, if that happens, one shouldn’t think that there will be a shortage of Kleenex tissue to help dry up any teary eyes for Trump. The fact is that some Republicans who still have good name recognition and some influence among the base wouldn’t miss Trump, who sincerely believe that Trump’s time has come to bow out, whether ceremonially or not. One thing that we can probably be sure of, is that Trump will not go down without a fight. Even if he has to cut a hole in the boat and take his political enemies with him. Then, WHO is shark meat? Remember, the world is watching. So is God.
