Over Before It Started

Something about this story just doesn't sound right. In one of the most bizarre and terrifying moments in life, a man who had just gotten married allegedly opens fire on a passenger in his car and on other people who were also in their vehicles. According to reports, Devin Jose Jones was stuck in traffic on the Bonnet Carre' Spillway heading back to Alexandria on Saturday night, July 31, 2021 when the alleged gunfire happened. An argument began as Jones allegedly accused his wife of having an affair with the male passenger, according to the St. John Parish Sheriff's office. Jones, 30, still in his tux, produced a gun and allegedly shot the unidentified male in the leg, got out of his vehicle, and reportedly shot at another vehicle, hitting that person in the hand. Officers responded quickly to the scene and apprehended Jones before there were further injuries. No one was killed in the incident, but many people were stranded and afraid in their vehicles as they learned what was happening on the Spillway. Traffic was backed up, and many of those stranded sent out text messages alerting others who didn't know what was going on that it was more than an accident that caused traffic to back up. Jones was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated second-degree battery, and two counts of aggravated criminal damage to property. It appears that this marriage is over before it got a chance to get off of the ground. So many questions one could ask. The first is why was another passenger with them, especially the guy accused of having an affair with the bride? If the groom was so sure that something was going on before the wedding, why would he go ahead with the wedding? Why let "the competition" go back with them? There are not too many (I don't know of any) guys that get to spend the first night of their wedding in jail. One has to wonder if Jones was simmering inside, and the traffic backup gave him the opportunity to get everything out in the open. Jones will probably have plenty of time to think about what he did, as he is looking at some serious jail time. Meanwhile, as he is thinking, it won't do him any good to wonder in the words of that old school song, "Who's loving you from the mistakes that I made". Could it be the guy that got shot? Seriously folks, take time...as long as it takes to know them.
