No Struggle, No Progress

Radio Stations Matter

I was born in the late '60s growing up listening to all types of music such as gospel, jazz, R&B, reggae, blues, classical, and even country. My favorite happens to be rap! In most music, the lyrics usually tell a story about life’s events, ups and downs, or feelings such as happiness or sadness. Music is supposed to be soothing to one's soul. I am writing this article today because of the music I hear blasting through radio waves. This is an appeal to your station for help and understanding with what I am asking of you. First and foremost, we need your help to stop the violence in the Black Community. You may ask, "How can I help?". We are asking this on behalf of the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and even grandparents who have lost a loved one to this war that is taking place in the streets of America among our youth. Here's how we would like you to help. We suggest you play music that reflects more harmony in its lyrics instead of profanity and violence. Many artists have songs that can reflect this idea. My appeal is not to censor one's freedom of speech or artistic expression. I would like to know if you, The Radio Station, as DJs and Executives, are taking a closer look at what is portrayed in this music and its implications. There was a time when music was only for the club scene because of its contents. It had its place, and everyone understood that. If it did get radio air-time, its implied message would be blotted out. In today's world, things have changed. It is difficult for me to sugarcoat this topic because I honestly feel like there is too much promotion of vulgarity, including gun violence and drug usage that we are bombarded with every minute of the day. This article is not to say that you're the problem but to say you can be a part of the solution because, as we all know, "It takes a village." Brother Revoil Muhammad
