Monroe Dispatch - No Struggle, No Progress

Mr. Amos Brown Jr. was born to Amos and Roxie Brown Sr. on November 3, 1935, in Wisner, LA. At an early age, Amos confessed to Christ and was baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Wisner, LA. He later joined Triumph Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon under the leadership of Reverend F.D. Nash and later Reverend Eddie Stewart. He was known at church to be the "singing deacon". He led many songs at the deacon pew as the "singing deacon" and unofficial choir member. During his service as a deacon, he was instrumental in event planning, mentoring, participating in Healing Service, serving as a member of the Trustee Board and church secretary, and representing Triumph as a guest speaker in the surrounding church community. Amos attended Wisner High School in Wisner, LA, where he graduated in 1955 and went on to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. He was on the Dean's List multiple times. Amos had a passion for sports. He was a member of LHSAA, where he served as an official for various sporting events in high schools in northeast Louisiana. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Amos won third place in a bass tournament in 1986. He fished in many local bodies of water, but his favorite was Black Bayou Lake. He was employed by and retired from Selig Furniture, which later became Simmons USA in Monroe, LA. Amos also retired from Wal-Mart Supercenter in Monroe, LA. He then was employed by and retired from the city of Monroe Department of Parks and Recreation. Amos enjoyed music. He was very outgoing, vocal, sociable, talkative, organized, intelligent, and extremely prompt. He was always a great motivator and mentor to the youth in sports throughout the community. He never met a stranger and had many friends. Amos went home to be with the Lord on February 26, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Roxie Brown, eldest sister, Bessie Watson, two beloved nephews, Henry "Bay Boy" Watson and George "Spencer" Helton, daughter, Judy B. Staten, and son, Gary C. Brown. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Jessie Brown of Monroe, LA; three sons - Gregory Brown (Patricia)of Monroe, LA, Danny Bryant, nephew, (Madonna)of Lafayette, LA, and Randy Brown of Crowley, TX; five daughters - Linda Brown of Little Elm, TX, Cindy Moy of Dallas, TX, Paula Banks of Little Elm, TX, Roxanne Davis (goddaughter) of Dallas, TX, and Nicole Brown of Monroe, LA; fifteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one sister - Nettie B. Brown of Wisner, LA; two brothers-in-law - Roosevelt Bryant (Katie) of Baker, LA, and Larry Bryant of Texas City, TX; one niece - Roxie Mae Demley (Edward) of Laplace, LA, three nephews - Jose Watson (Deitra) of Wisner, LA, Fredrick Watson (Angela) of Dallas, TX, and Demetrick Demely of Wisner, LA; and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Funeral services are Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Triumph Baptist Church in Monroe, LA. Visitation is Friday, March 10, from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at Smith Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
