Menace to Society

January 14, 2021

Last week the world watched as Republican extremists walked through the United States Capitol building wreaking havoc after receiving marching orders from the country's current leader. To date, the 45th president has not owned up to telling his supporters to march to the US Capitol. Despite his denials, his rally speech shares that he did give rally-goers a directive to storm the capitol and disrupt Congress from certifying the 2020 election and giving the ok for the Biden inauguration. What we witnessed Wednesday, January 6, 2021, was yet another reveal of how the nation’s biased system treats Whites vs. Blacks, as many people last week trespassed in the halls of the US Capitol and walked about freely. Seven months prior, thousands of peaceful protestors were met with officers armed with teargas, rubber bullets, and arrests. The rallies in June were to protest killings of unarmed Black Americans; the rally this January was to protest election results. Contesting Trump's second election is a moot point because the votes (both popular and electoral college) were certified. At this point, it is ridiculous that people feel it is ok to disrupt democracy in the way it happened last week. It is clear we all have differences in opinion based on our perspective developed through our lives and circumstances. What is unacceptable is creating strife because you don't get your way. The people who showed up at our nation’s capital are fighting a losing battle. They are wrong in their pursuit to create more hostility and conflict. Their actions only show the frayed veil that is held up to cover the inequities of our country. The blessing is there is still time to "do the right thing". If 2020 has only shown us one thing, it is we should all try to make things better than make them worse. Let's not repeat 2020; let's move on wiser. Let's do what is right. Biden was selected to serve as the next president of the United States of America. If you don't agree with his win, get behind a candidate that you feel deserves to hold the highest seat in the land and vote for them in 2024.
