Special Session Fails Crime's Wrong Direction

March 14, 2024

Louisiana House Democrats are committed to addressing crime and enhancing community safety. They regret not being consulted in shaping the agenda for the second special legislative session. The majority of bills proposed for this session, they argue, fail to address the root causes of crime and are reactive rather than proactive, thus lacking effectiveness in enhancing community safety. Furthermore, House Democrats are concerned that these bills may disproportionately affect Black and low-income individuals, potentially leading to a surge in non-violent offenders being incarcerated, which would impose a significant financial burden on Louisiana taxpayers.

House Democrats advocate for a more comprehensive approach to effectively address crime in Louisiana. They believe investing in education, mental health services, and job training for at-risk communities can reduce crime rates. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of implementing rehabilitation and reintegration programs for incarcerated individuals to reduce recidivism significantly. The limited scope of this session frustrates them, as they feel it does not allow for addressing these critical issues. The House Democrats point out that Louisiana continues to struggle with high crime and incarceration rates, indicating that the "lock them up and throw away the key" approach has not been successful. They criticize Governor Landry and the Republican-led legislature for what they perceive as steering Louisiana in the wrong direction. They highlight Governor Landry's decision not to spend $3.5 million to receive over $70 million to feed nearly 600,000 children while being eager to allocate taxpayer funds towards incarcerating individuals without a clear plan for reducing crime.

They emphasize the importance of voting, stating that it is the only voice that makes everyone equal. They warn that failure to vote will have repercussions for generations to come. Louisiana House Democrats remain committed to advocating for evidence-based criminal justice reforms that effectively reduce crime and enhance community safety.
