Monroe Black History

Spotlighting Richwood High School and ULM Legendary Alumnus Dr. Joe Profit

In honor of Black History Month 2024, the Richwood Community and Bryant's Addition in Monroe, LA, proudly recognize "A Moment in Black History." Joe Profit stood out as the first Black athlete to play football in the Gulf States Conference and the first and only first-round pick from NLU in the NFL Draft. He was selected as the No. 7 pick by the Atlanta Falcons on January 28, 1971. Profit was a First-Team All-American and the conference's all-time champion with 2,818 yards. He earned GSC Player of the Year in 1970 and was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. On February 19, 1971, Dr. Joe Profit was honored as one of the University of Louisiana Monroe's (ULM's) most distinguished alumni, and that day was proclaimed "Joe Profit Day" in tribute to his exceptional contributions to the University.

The Shreveport Times reported that the university, then known as Northeast Louisiana University, "bestowed the highest honor it could as it concluded 'Joe Profit Day' by retiring the Little All-American and (NFL) first-round draft choice's No. 40".

The community is thrilled to have a local person from the neighborhood shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of Dr. Joe Profit, a trailblazing figure who left an indelible mark on college football, professional sports, and the business world. Graduating as the Sunbelt Conference's all-time leading rusher, Dr. Profit not only showcased athletic prowess but also broke barriers as the first African American to play a significant role in college football within a predominantly white institution in Louisiana.

Beyond the football field, Dr. Profit seamlessly transitioned into a successful business career, founding Communications International Inc., recognized by INC.500 Magazine as one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in America. Dr. Profit's business acumen earned him the title of "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst & Young and induction into the Institute of American Entrepreneurs™.

His impact extended to prestigious boards such as the International Trade Commission for Policy, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank, and the U.S. Department of Transportation Advisory Board. Dr. Profit's wealth of experience as an NFL top draft pick, successful entrepreneur, and seasoned business leader forms the bedrock of his influential leadership position.

Dr. Profit's journey from truly humble beginnings serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and success in challenging environments.

Central to Dr. Profit's philosophy are the three '3T's': teach, train, and trust. Drawing from his diverse experiences in business enterprises, and collegiate and professional sports, he has become a seasoned leader dedicated to guiding individuals to unparalleled success. By emphasizing balance, discipline, and setting priorities, he encourages individuals to unleash their true potential. His extraordinary journey through sports, business, and public service serves as an inspiring guide for those seeking empowerment on the path to success.

As we celebrate Black History Month, join Dr. Joe Profit on a journey of empowerment, balance, and unparalleled success. Together, let us redefine what's possible and draw inspiration from the wisdom gained through yesterday's challenges.
