Mayo, Dawson What Happened?

Dispatch

Jamie Mayo

As I pursue public office at this stage in my life, I have committed to being more transparent and willing to share many moments from my life to inspire young adults interested in running for public office. However, I never thought a part of my story would include physical contact with another individual in my pursuits. On the night of February 22, 2024, at the Benoit Recreation Center, a political forum had concluded, leaving only three of us remaining. I was outside, engaged in conversation, when Councilwoman Kema Dawson approached me. She accused me of being responsible for her job loss and for the recall effort against her. She also blamed me for other negative incidents in her life. I was shocked and appalled by her accusations, as they were completely untrue. Our exchange escalated, and she even placed her finger in my face, refusing to remove it despite my requests. Instead, she grabbed my left hand and twisted it, causing a sprain. Fortunately, former city councilman Kenneth Wilson witnessed the incident and intervened, urging me to leave for my safety. As I departed, Councilwoman Dawson continued to hurl insults at me. Over the weekend, my left hand became swollen, prompting me to seek medical assistance at a local walk-in clinic. The diagnosis was a sprain, and my hand was wrapped for support.

Despite this incident, I remain committed to completing the work ahead of me.

City Council Dr. Kema Dawson
