Basketball Game Altercation

December 21, 2023

Melvin Slack asserts that he is a "proud, always super supporter of Carroll High School and always will be." The 1988 graduate, known as "Mr. Carroll," passionately backs the school's athletic program and was present at last Thursday's game against West Monroe on December 7, 2023. However, an alleged incident involving Slack and a Monroe police officer left him angered and upset about the officer's conduct.

According to Slack, he was sitting in his regular spot just before the "big" game started when someone asked him to exit a nearby door. Slack mentioned that he "didn't know" since there was no "No Exit" sign posted. Shortly before the game began, Slack decided to use the door closest to him to go to the restroom. That's when the incident with the officer unfolded. Slack opened the door to exit, and the officer allegedly rushed toward him, engaging in a verbal confrontation with highly charged profanity, including derogatory language. Slack claimed the officer berated him, using offensive language and making threats. The altercation caught the attention of a Carroll coach, who intervened and instructed the officer to leave Slack alone. The coach clarified that he was unaware of the door situation and allowed Slack to sit in his usual spot. Despite the officer staying in the vicinity, Slack enjoyed the game without further issues.

Although Slack wonders if the incidents are personal, he remains committed to attending Carroll events because he is "blue and gold" all the way. He attended Tuesday night's game against Woodlawn on December 12, 2023, where the officer stayed on the far end of the court. Slack ensured it was okay to use the door in question and confirmed with the coach. Carroll emerged victorious in the game.
