Help celebrate the induction of the late Lula Mae Goins Green, the first African American nurse in charge of an all-White nursing ward, on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at 3:00 PM at the African American Museum, 1051 Chennault Park in Monroe, LA. Lula Mae Goins, the fourth child of Mamie and Percy, was born on November 23, 1932, and raised in Monroe. She attended Monroe Colored High. Lula continued her education at the Louisiana School of Nursing for Coloreds in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she graduated at the top of the class of 1958 as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She started her nursing career at St. Francis Catholic Hospital as one of the few licensed African-American nurses on staff in Monroe, LA. After a few years at St. Francis, it was requested that she become the first African American charge nurse on an all-White ward (floor); Lula took on the challenge and excelled. She became well-liked and well-known throughout the medical community of Monroe. In July 2011, Lula was recognized by the city of Monroe for this historic act. Lula was a licensed nurse in five states: Louisiana, Texas, Washington, Nevada, and California. Yes, at some point in her life, Lula lived in these states. On April 19, 2016, surrounded by her family, Lula took her final rest into God's care.
