Built to Last

Dr. Ollibeth Reddix

I like to buy new, up to date gadgets. l always have... new sewing machine, new washing machine, new computer all with bright shiny bells and whistles. But I noticed that the newer the gadgets the less they last. The more expensive the items the less they last. Even our brand-new cars are made out of material that easily breaks upon impact. Then, take our Smart Phones...how many times does that glass screen break, and all that trusted information is in danger of getting lost. We don't waste a minute getting that phone fixed no matter how expensive. Take that new washing machine that boast of being energy efficient. It doesn't take much water, it takes forever to wash but when your clothes finally come out..." They still dirty." That old stuff was built to last. Take that old Kenmore washing machine. It wasn't because it was so pretty that you loved it. It was because it took a lickin' and kept on kickin'. You could open the top while it was still washing, put clothes in and "viola". It may be rusty around the edges but when you finished washing your clothes would come out clean. That old stuff was built to last. At the NAACP Debate Forum on Tuesday September 19th, I heard the word "stamina" mentioned as a strength. I thought about it and said to myself ..I am a tough old bird. I have both stamina and I am built to last. I stay up late, get up early and work on a thing until it's worked out. I will not quit until I get the job done or the job " just can't be done" by me. For me, that's what "Dedicated to Serve" means. I have both the passion and the stamina to serve until I finish my assignment. I am "Built to Last" Dr. Ollibeth Reddix Police Jury District D Vote #68
