Burnie "Mike" Simmons, Jr.

Burnie "Mike" Simmons, Jr., was the son of the late Burnie Simmons, Sr., and Lula Vivian Simmons. Mike went to his heavenly home on August 28, 2023. He attended and graduated from Rhymes High school on May 22, 1953 and furthered his education by enlisting in the United States Army February 7, 1958. In the Army he was a truck driver of heavy equipment. He was a lifelong member of The Saint Joe Baptist Church in Rayville, LA. Mike enjoyed attending and participating in the Men's Sunday School class every Sunday until his failing health prevented him from attending. Burnie "Mike" Simmons married the love of his life, Hattie Saucer, on February 21, 1966. During this union they reared 3 children, Bernadette Simmons Wilson (Steve); Marc Simmons (Marie) and Tasha Simmons (their granddaughter). Mike's sole passion and purpose in life was that of wood craft and building. He could use scrap wood and create a masterpiece. He designed and built his home, where he and Hattie resided for over 40 years, brick by brick and nail by nail. He loved using his hands for creating such beautiful pieces as China cabinets and bookcases. He always wanted to help someone if he could in any way. Mike believed that to succeed in life you must work hard and save even harder. Mike had various occupations throughout his life as a custodial worker, a carpenter and he retired from Century Tel where he worked for over 45 years. Burnie "Mike" Simmons was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Hattie Saucer Simmons, his parents Burnie, Sr. and Lula Simmons and his only brother Leon "Bubba" "Larry" Simmons. There are many who will cherish their experience with "Mike".
