No Social September 2023

As we shift our mindset to prepare for a new semester of learning through formal schooling, many things should be considered. Since its inception, the smartphone has been an invaluable device to many. With smartphones came social media networks and platforms for people to connect and engage.

Social media is a great tool to use to connect with others, acquire news and information, build community, display self-expression, and entertainment.

Despite its many benefits, social media can also negatively affect people. Like many other things, people can develop a habit of good and bad things that social apps intend to develop.

Great for us, there are many ways we can get back on track. Be mindful of your digital habits. Pay attention to how much time you spend online and how it makes you feel. Regular self-checks can help you identify patterns of overuse.

Disable non-essential notifications on your devices to reduce distractions and the urge to check them constantly. Establish areas in your home where digital devices are not allowed, such as the bedroom or dining area. This can help create tech-free spaces for relaxation and quality time with family. Many devices and operating systems offer built-in screen time tracking and limiting features. Use them to set daily usage limits and receive reminders when you approach those limits.


Explore hobbies, interests, and activities that don't involve screens. Engaging in physical activities, spending time outdoors, reading books, and socializing in person are great alternatives. And lastly, periodically take extended breaks from digital devices. Use this time to focus on other aspects of life, recharge, and gain perspective.

Remember, combating any addiction requires a combination of awareness, self-discipline, and practical strategies.
