Join library presenter Juanita Cook, owner of A-Berry Farms as she talks all things berries, Thursday, July 13, 2023, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM at Carver-McDonald Branch Library, 2941 Renwick St., Monroe, LA. A berry is a small, pulpy, and often edible fruit. Typically, berries are juicy, rounded, brightly colored, sweet, sour or tart, and do not have a stone or pit, although many pips or seeds may be present. Berries are low in calories and extremely nutritious. In addition to being high in antioxidants, they also contain several vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, vitamins C and K, fiber, and prebiotics-carbohydrates that help promote a healthy gut. A-Berry Farms was founded in 2020 as a small locally owned and operated business by William and Juanita Auttonberry. Located in the heart of southwestern Ouachita Parish, the farm holds true to old-fashioned and conventional methods of preserving and creating some of the finest syrups and jellies. All fruits and sugarcane are cultivated and carefully handpicked. A-Berry Farms takes great pride in what goes into its products. Whether you are a seasoned jelly maker or just starting out, they offer blueberries, blackberries, and many new berries for you to explore your hand at jelly making. Upon availability, they also offer pure blueberry, blackberry, and mayhew juice. Sugarcane or sugar cane is a species of tall, perennial grass that is used for sugar production. The plants are 2–6 m tall with stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in sucrose, which accumulates in the stalk internodes. As always remember, jelly making is a work of art and it requires much time and patience to perfect! Happiness is always homemade!
