Val Jean Purnell was born October 30, 1943 to Hilton Lee and Mildred Purnell of Monroe, LA. Val Jean was the elder of a pair of fraternal twins. He gave his life to Christ at an early age at Martin Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Monroe, LA. At church, Val held many positions, including Sunday School Superintendent and Christian Youth Fellowship Activities Leader, where he helped develop youth and strengthen their relationship with God.
