Disclaimer: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Monroe Police are looking for a second individual who was recently involved in a deadly altercation at a convenience store. One alleged suspect has been identified as Xavier Givens but has not been arrested. Police believe he is the brother of Jarvis Johnson, the other individual involved in the shooting.

MPD responded to a deadly altercation Tuesday, February 7, 2023, in the 1200 block of Winnsboro Rd. in Monroe, LA, that resulted in the death of a local man. A convenience store located at the intersection of South 9th St. and Winnsboro Rd. was the scene where two individuals allegedly drew handguns and began firing at each other. One of the individuals, David Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The alleged shooter that engaged the victim has been identified as 31-year-old Jarvis L. Johnson. According to MPD, the incident started when an unidentified male exited the store and became involved in a verbal altercation with an (as of press time) unidentified victim. The unidentified male's brother, identified as Johnson, exited a vehicle where a physical confrontation between him and the victim started and escalated into a deadly encounter.

Police say that during the altercation, both the victim and Johnson produced firearms and began firing their weapons, with the victim suffering wounds to the right side of his chest. Police also said that two more unidentified victims sustained gunshot wounds, but their injuries were non-life threatening. After the shooting, both men fled, according to police reports. Johnson, the alleged shooter, turned himself in to officers, telling them that he feared for his brother's safety as being the reason why he became involved in the altercation after it started between his brother and the victim. Johnson also told officers that the victim fired his weapon first. Johnson was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, Criminal Conspiracy, and Illegal Carrying of Weapons.
