Domestic abuse continues to be a recurring problem that happens more often than one may think, as some couples decide to live together instead of being on their own. When that happens, no one actually "belongs" to the other, but there are times when one or the other may want to be in charge. A West Monroe couple has been arrested stemming from a violent incident that occurred on January 26, 2022, between the two over alleged messages from an outside source. West Monroe Police was called to the scene where the couple lived and was told by 20-year-old Casimir Deshay Muhammad that an altercation ensued between her and live-in partner Arteaus Nichols. According to police, Muhammad said she followed Nichols because he had found out that Muhammad was getting text messages from other people, leading to the alleged domestic incident. According to police, Nichols allegedly choked Muhammad as she was lying down, but the altercation didn't end there. Nichols then pulled her hair, spit in her face, and allegedly slapped Muhammad and punched her face and her legs. The alleged physical assault continued as Nichols took Muhammad's cell phone and keys, and she said she was locked in the bedroom. Somehow Muhammad said that she managed to escape from the bedroom and armed herself with a knife. From there, according to police reports, Nichols wanted to leave after finding out about the messages, but Muhammad allegedly prevented him from leaving. She then used the knife that she had, cut Nichols' hands, and bent his fingers, according to police. When someone arrived at the residence, Muhammad allegedly threatened that person as if she wanted to use it. After police heard from both individuals, they found out that Nichols and Muhammad were living together, but they were both arrested on a variety of charges. Muhammad was charged with Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and Domestic Abuse Battery. Nichols was charged with Domestic Abuse Battery and False Imprisonment. Take the time to truly know someone before things get out of hand.
