Remembering My Father

David Harris

The community is still waiting for an explanation from the Monroe Police Department (MPD) regarding what happened to David Harris. More importantly, the family of Harris wants to know the truth of what led to their loved one's death, but no one is talking to them. Harris, a Black man, is another victim who has died while in the custody of police officers, this time allegedly by MPD officers, and the Harris family is no closer to the truth about his death. The family and community only know that contact was made with Harris, something happened, and now another Black man has died under mysterious circumstances known only by God and the officers involved. Harris' family held a rally recently in front of city hall, calling attention to the disappointment that in the month since Harris died, they have not heard from officials with the MPD. Like other Black families, the family wants to see the video footage from the officers' body cam that would answer many questions surrounding Harris' death. Still, any visual footage of the encounter has been withheld, leaving many to feel suspicious. So the family and community must wait. Harris' son, David Harold-Harris Ruff, has nothing but good things to say about his father. Ruff says that his father's untimely death has been rough, but it is his abiding faith in God that keeps him going, knowing that there are still some tough days ahead. "I miss my dad", says Ruff, "but if there was one thing about him that I remember most was that he loved his kids". Ruff shared memories about his dad, from the time that he bought his car, and other memories that he holds close. Ruff said that he would fight for his father, and believes in "honoring his father/mother" as the Commandments require us to do. As a deacon at Greater Free Gift Baptist Church in Monroe, LA, pastored by Bishop Rodney McFarland, Ruff said that it is important that he carries no bitterness towards the police officers because of his faith. "What's done in the dark, will come to light", he says, knowing that the truth will eventually be revealed. During portions of the phone interview conducted by this reporter, Ruff was talked through tears, sharing that he wished he could have another moment with his dad.

"My father was a good man." said Ruff, "He treated everybody right, and he is in heaven."

He talked about how his father raised him to become the man he is today, but said that he never thought in a million years that he would have to bury his father in this way. Ruff said that the last time he saw his father was shortly before his passing. They went by Southern Classic Chicken on Winnsboro Road and shared a meal together. He says that he will continue to pray to ask for guidance and wait on the Lord to reveal the truth. In the meantime, he will listen to one of his favorite gospel songs called "Walk With Me, Lord"; please pray for the Harris family.
