LA Constitutional Firearms Bill... Permit Less Concealed Carry

April 15, 2021

Senator Jay Morris (R-West Monroe) has filed Senate Bill 118, which will confirm citizens’ constitutional right to bear arms, including carrying a concealed weapon without the necessity of a permit. The bill will allow all persons over the age of 21 who are not convicted felons to carry a concealed weapon without obtaining a concealed carry permit. This measure is often referred to as a “constitutional carry law,” which 18 other states have already passed.

“It’s time Louisiana joined the other 18 states which have passed constitutional carry,” said Senator Morris. “This bill really shouldn’t be necessary as our right to bear arms is already established under the Second Amendment, and any limitations on that right should be narrow.” The bill would allow Louisiana residents to continue obtaining permits if a resident needs reciprocity with other states that have a permit requirement. The bill keeps the prohibition that those that are legally intoxicated from drugs or alcohol cannot carry a concealed weapon. The bill has been assigned to Senate Committee Judiciary C. 18 US States have permitless concealed carry laws, which includes Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming (limited). When carrying a concealed firearm in any state you must go by the laws/regulations on carrying firearms in that state. It is the individual's responsibility to know those laws/regulations. If states restrict Permitless Carry to just their residents, the listing states that. Active military or veterans carrying under that exemption (under 21) should carry their military ID or, if discharged their DD214. This listing only covers the carrying of a “Concealed Handgun.”
