Disrespect to Kamala Harris

As if religion or what it is supposed to mean scripturally, needs another black eye. Kamala Harris, just as Barack Obama has done, will stand in the annals of history in America until the nation ceases no more. As all things this side of the prophesy in Revelation state, will cease to exist after God’s new city, New Jerusalem is created for the elect, so shall the words and deeds of modern man. As some have been “called” to be spokesmen for God in the churches’ pulpits around the world, comments that we hear some say, has to make one wonder who “actually” called them. An example of that assessment surfaced when two white pastors referred to Vice-President Kamala Harris as “Jezebel” not in a private conversation, but from their pulpits. According to media accounts, Steve Swofford, pastor of a Texas church allegedly said to his congregation, “What if something happened to Joe Biden (not President Joe Biden) and “Jezebel” had to take over?” Not to be outdone, another Texas pastor, Tom Buck also referred to Vice-President Harris as “Jezebel” by saying that he “couldn’t imagine any God-fearing Israelite who would’ve wanted their daughters to view Jezebel (Harris) as an inspirational role model because she was a woman in power”. And conservatives wonder why that even before the pandemic, why church membership across white America was dwindling over the decades. Perhaps it may be because of comments like those from pastors who seem to sound more like politicians than, well, pastors. If one didn’t know who these two individuals were and just by listening to their comments, one could surmise that they were either politicians (running or not), or spokespersons for a political organization. However, to pick the name of a woman who has to be one of the most “hated” of women (maybe “Delilah” is a close second) in the scriptures and label the vice-president in the same league, is perhaps crossing the line. First of all, it shows how wide the chasm is between people socially, economically and even from a religious perspective because religion has been used in this nation’s history to teach that some ethnic groups are inferior and somehow God “wanted it” that way. That is not how religion is described in the scriptures, not as a weapon, but as an example to show Christ’s love for one another.

Conservative pastors have long shown their propensity to elect Republicans over Democrats since the days of civil rights marches to them becoming more involved in politics not by campaigning, but through subtle messages from, you guessed it, the pulpits. Since the days of Ronald Reagan and Jerry Falwell, religious conservatives have been using the scriptures to gain political power, even as their membership rolls shrank. The opposite of conservative theology we are told, is “liberal” theology and therein are the battle lines drawn. Those two white pastors could have chosen another name to call Mrs. Harris (maybe the Holy Spirit told them overwise), but they knew that by invoking the name Jezebel, their message was to not trust Harris to “do what is right” if anything should happen to President Biden. The message is to not “unite” (there’s that word again) under a Harris administration, just as they are not doing under a Biden administration. What happened to the “divided house can’t stand” sermon that we used to read and hear about? Too much politics from the pulpit.

More importantly, pastors like those two might be playing the race card. Conservatives were not overjoyed to see Barack Obama elected as the first Black president, missing an opportunity to show how God in His own way can use the race of a man of enslaved people to lead a nation, divided by race. Obama wasn’t “their man”, but it has been proven that ex-president Donald Trump was and still is. It also shows that Republican men and many Republican women, have issues with women of color wielding power. We see it in Congress as Alexandria Cassio-Cortez is hammered by conservative media along with Maxine Waters, and other women of color. They are literally calling them “evil” women without saying it, as they know who the intended audience is. Harris is Black, ready to set in (God forbid) if she has to and if conservatives had a difficult time accepting a Black man as the most powerful man on Earth, we now know what to expect if there is a President Harris. Obama and Harris became who they are through the same system that dozens of white men did to become president/vice president. That’s why white Republican legislatures across the nation are finding more ways to keep Black and brown people from the polls. Where is the sermon in that? Remember, the world is watching. So is God.
