Most great leaders remember/know their call to lead. It is one that is predestined with unique life experiences that prepare them for great responsibility, all at the right time. Martin Lemelle Jr. has come a long way from his humble beginnings as a student leader at Grambling State University. Now, as a top candidate for Louisiana's 5th District Congressional seat, he is ready to represent the state. His journey in leadership began while he was a student at the historically Black college, 40 miles west of Monroe. Lemelle was born and raised in Grambling, LA, and had the credentials to go to many other schools across the country but knew Grambling State was the place he needed to be. The university is also a very special place for his family. His parents Cynthia and Martin Sr. were high school sweethearts, who both attended Grambling State and eventually settled in Grambling, LA, after his father ended his career as a professional basketball player. Martin's parents led the way for a legacy of service and leadership, serving as administrators at the university for many years. On campus, Martin represented many organizations and sat in the highest seat as student government president. He implemented many successful initiatives, but one of his fondest was galvanizing other student leaders across the state, creating a collective that offered support, training, and resources to strengthen the state's young leaders. While serving his university and completing his studies, Lemelle gained great experience serving as an intern for then LA Senator Mary Landrieu, where he received great insight on what it is like to lead the state in Washington, DC. After his undergraduate studies, Martin earned a seat at the table working at many companies, including IBM and General Electric (GE). He also continued his education, obtaining an MBA from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Over the years, he has held managerial and executive-level roles and managed operating budgets of tens of millions of dollars. In 2016, Martin returned back to his roots, becoming Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at his alma mater. His interest in serving as Congressman for the state of Louisiana comes at a time when the state and country nears a significant turning point. He believes in Louisiana and knows there are many ways in which he can help the state progress. His extensive work experience and successes are proof that he is aligned to continue his great destiny. His time has come; it is here and now.
