Monroe Dispatch - No Struggle, No Progress

Mayor Jamie Mayo & the Monroe City Council share this announcement on behalf of Public Works Director Tom Janway and Sewer Manager Charles Westrom. The City of Monroe Sewer Division has 75 lifts stations around the city. We have been experiencing problems at the lift stations and sewer plant with disinfectant wipes, paper towels, baby wipes, and other sanitary products being flushed down the toilet. This is causing major blockages in our sewer system resulting in Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs). Toilet paper is designed to dissolve almost instantly, but wipes and paper towels are not designed that way. We are pleading with the public to stop flushing these products as blockages and sewer overflows are on the rise. Please properly dispose of your wipes, paper towels, and similar products by placing them in a garbage can. Although some of these products are labeled “flushable”, they are too thick to properly dissolve when flushed down the toilet.
