SU Alumni President Dilcie Grren presented Rev. Annanias Word with a token of gratitude

The Southern University Alumni/Monroe Chapter worshipped at Zion Traveler Baptist Church Sunday March 9 during the morning. service in honor of the University's 140 years in existence. Dilcie Green, president of the organization, thanked Pastor Annanias Word for hosting the group. The university was founded during the Reconstruction Era that occurred after the United States Civil War. In 1880, with the passage of Act 87, SU was established in 1881. The first campus was on Calliope Street in New Orleans. In 1890, SU became a designated federal land-grant institution by the second Morrill Act of 1890. The University moved its operation to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in March of 1914 under the auspices of Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark. SU has experienced dramatic changes over the years. It remains the only Historically Black University system in the nation. The system includes Southern University an A&M College in Baton Rouge, Southern University in New Orleans, Southern University in Shreveport, the Southern University Law Center, and the Southern University Agriculture Research and Extension Center. The University contributes more than $160,00 annually to Louisiana's economy. Pastor word said he was honored to host such a prestigious institution.
