President's Taxes Fair Game

November 7, 2018

It appears that President Donald Trump has found himself between the proverbial “rock and a hard place”, now that a three judge panels of Appeals Court has ruled that his taxes/financial records must be turned over. State prosecutors in New York sued to have Trump’s accounting firm turn over his financials records dating back to 2011. The president had said more than three years ago that he “would love” to disclose his tax returns like all other modern-day presidents had done, except that he was under audit. The president has been playing that same song since, except no one, even Republicans do not want to hear it anymore. Mr. Trump knows that IF he wants to, he could have released them years ago on his own, even “under audit”. However, for some reason, a man who boasts about his wealth, but never about his honesty, doesn’t want people to know about the “art” that he employed when making all of his deals. The president will complain once again that he is not being treated fairly, and that no president in history has had to face what he has faced. The next tweet from the president, which will be aimed at his base and Republicans leaders in Washington, will call on them to defend him as the witch-hunt continues.

Lawyers for the president argued that Mr. Trump could not be investigated while he is in office, because the “distraction” would be a heavy burden on him, preventing him from effectively doing his job. It gets worse. Trump’s lawyers also said that the Constitution protected him from all legal trials because it gave him unlimited immunity from investigations/trials while he was in office. The president’s lawyers must have thought that they were going to catch those judges napping on the bench, as one of the judges used Trump’s own words against him. Remember when President Trump said, that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and nothing would be done about it? Well, that’s what one of the judges asked in a hypothetical questioning of the president’s so called immunity, and to the judges’ amazement, the lawyer said yes. With an impeachment looming probably sooner than Republicans think, and perhaps an expedited appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court over his taxes, President Trump may start throwing more people under the bus in order to protect himself. Still the president proclaims that he hasn’t done anything illegal under the law or the Constitution. Which begs the question from many legal experts, what does he have to hide if he is so innocent? Why is he stopping people from testifying over a “perfect” phone call?

If President Trump had been standing in the presence of Pilate two thousand years ago, and armed with the facts of the president’s recent actions, would he have been found innocent or guilty? I can hear Mike Pence’s response now, in addition to everything else that Republicans have been saying in defense of the president. They, as they are doing now will argue the PROCESS of the inquiry, not the SUBSTANCE, because that would involve the facts in writing and witness testimony. Democrats in Washington don’t need to wait for Trump’s taxes, as possible obstruction charges from the Mueller Report, plus a quid pro quo case that Republicans refuse to accept, will cause the president to have more rough days ahead of him. As was said, the president is caught between a rock and a hard place. Now it appears that the president’s place in Washington is getting smaller, as well as his rock. Remember, the world is watching. So is God.
