Eugene "Duce" Newman

Eugene Newman was born August 20, 1944 to Eddie and Rosie Newman. He was the fourth oldest of thirteen siblings. Eugene was affectionately known as "Duce!" Many didn't know his real name and only knew Eugene as "Duce!" Very few called him Eugene while everyone knew "Duce" Newman. Hearts were saddened when hearing the news that "Duce" had passed. "Duce" was Monroe's all around outdoor man. He was unofficially named the Mayor of Black Bayou Lake. He taught many children and adults how to swim, water safety and recreational sports. "Duce" performed in the 1960's on one of the Black Happiness Exchange programs aired on KNOE TV during the Black Struggle. He was a leader for the Goodfellows, charitable organization and many other dynamite roles of trailblazing for Black America. "Duce" is already missed at the McDonald's on 165 South where he was one of the early morning fixtures. His second home was in his boat out on Black Bayou Lake where he was a master fisherman. There are still several deep freezers full of cleaned fish which he caught seven days a week and holidays. In his early years, "Duce" ran Marbles Recreation Center with order. He was a no non-sense guy who only feared God. At Marbles you could feel his presence where he earned his respect which wasn't an easy task. "Duce" was also a great family man plus he had skills as an entertainer. When "Duce" graced the microphone, you thought Tyrone Davis was in the building. At one time, everyone in Monroe, LA and throughout Northeast LA knew or had heard of Eugene "Duce" Newman. He was a great guy who lived life the way he saw it! Eugene "Duce" Newman went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2017. His funeral services will be Saturday November 11, 2017 at 2pm at Liberty Christian Center, 3200 Hwy 165 in Monroe, LA. Visitation is Friday November 10, 4-6 pm, Friday at Smith Funeral Home in Monroe, LA. Cherishing his memory are his wife Linda B. Newman, brothers George and Lawrence Newman and a host of family and friends. Please remember this family in prayer.
